A simple “Flag Day” ceremony

by Chuck Spicer

It was a short and simple “Flag Day” ceremony.
Members of Camp Gordon Johnston American Legion Post 82, local residents and out-of-town weekend visitors gathered around the flagpole and replaced an old “Old Glory” with a new one. With the strains of the “Star Spangled Banner” wafting in the background.
Then the master of ceremonies (yours truly) introduced the new post commander, A.P. Whaley. A 20-year veteran of the United States Army, the Lanark area resident retired more than a decade ago as a Chief Warrant Officer Three. Having survived a near-fatal helicopter crash, he later become most adept at training helicopter pilots.
A.P. created and ran a boating business in the Carrabelle area for more than a decade and (for health reasons) just recently retired from that activity. By the way, the boats and business are currently on the market.
Whaley introduced his Executive Board: Joe Myrick (1st Vice Commander), Tommy Larson (2nd Vice Commander), Chuck Spicer (3rd Vice Commander), Jimmy Akers (Sergeant at Arms), David Mills (Adjutant), Michael Guidry (Chaplain), and Michael Hansson (Historian). (Continued)

The Forgotten Coast of Florida lies along the Panhandle. It is bounded on the West by Mexico Beach, St. Joe Beach and Port St. Joe. Going East you come to Simmons Bayou, Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, and The City of Apalachicola on the banks of the Apalachicola River. Continuing east you come to Eastpoint, St. George Island, Carrabelle, Lanark Village, St. James Island, St. Teresa Island, and Alligator Point in Franklin County, FL. As you cross the Ochlockonee River on Highway 98 you enter Wakulla County, FL and Ochlockonee Bay, Mashes Sands, Panacea, Live Oak Island, Shell Point and St. Marks. The St. Marks Lighthouse and nature preserve is the easternmost place on the Forgotten Coast. Each area is different, and all are uncrowded Natural Wonders.
