July On The Forgotten Coast Sizzles All Month Long
7/1/2009
The 17th Annual Port St. Joe Scallop Festival is a whole lot of fun, especially when folks start lining up for scallop dinners cooked by the Lion’s Club.

Lots of July 4 Celebrations, Outdoor Movies Galore, Fishing, And Scallops

by Ed Tiley

July on the Forgotten Coast is usually hotter’n anything but August. After the heat wave last month remember to keep a bottle of SPF 600 sunscreen handy.
As you might expect, most of this months events are centered around the July 4 holiday, but there are some other interesting things going on too. Since the Fourth will come and go before the majority of our readers get their hands on the paper, so we’ve put all the Fourth of July information in a separate article.
Our summer visitor crowd is largely made up of families, so what could be better in these lean times than a free movie for the whole family? The idea is so popular that this month there will be eleven of them!
The folks over in Gulf County and Mexico Beach have put together eight dates this month for family movie nights. In the list below you’ll see an abbreviation for the location of the showing. PSJ is Frank Pate Park in Port St Joe next to the Capital City Bank. WB is WindMark Beach on the green just past The School of Fish, and MB is on the green at The El' Governor Motel, Mexico Beach.
2 - July PSJ Mamma Mia! PG-13
3 - July WB Twilight PG-13
9 - July MB Mamma Mia! PG-13
16 - July PSJ Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa PG
17 - July WB Nights in Rodanthe PG-13
23 - July MB Happy Feet PG
30 - July PSJ Race to Witch Mountain PG
31 - July MB Bedtime Stories PG
In Franklin County, the Sheriff’s S.A.F.E. Program (Student And Family Events) is also hosting family movie nights in July. And they’re throwing in free popcorn too! The titles have not yet been chosen, so I can only give you the locations:
Thursday, July 2 at Battery Park in Apalachicola
Thursday, July 9 at Lighthouse Park on St. (Continued)

The Forgotten Coast of Florida lies along the Panhandle. It is bounded on the West by Mexico Beach, St. Joe Beach and Port St. Joe. Going East you come to Simmons Bayou, Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, and The City of Apalachicola on the banks of the Apalachicola River. Continuing east you come to Eastpoint, St. George Island, Carrabelle, Lanark Village, St. James Island, St. Teresa Island, and Alligator Point in Franklin County, FL. As you cross the Ochlockonee River on Highway 98 you enter Wakulla County, FL and Ochlockonee Bay, Mashes Sands, Panacea, Live Oak Island, Shell Point and St. Marks. The St. Marks Lighthouse and nature preserve is the easternmost place on the Forgotten Coast. Each area is different, and all are uncrowded Natural Wonders.
