Dixie Theatre Professional Season
A Nice Family Gathering ~~ This play won the 2000 Rochester Playwright Festival for Phil Olson. This is a story about a man who loved his wife so much, he almost told her. It's Thanksgiving Day and the first family gathering at the Lundeen household since the Patriarch died. At the gathering, Dad comes back as a ghost with a mission: to tell his wife he loved her, something he neglected to tell her while he was alive. After all, they were only married for 41 years. The problem is, she can't hear or see him. Many past Dixie favorites return to bring this outstanding play to life. The cast includes Cleo Holladay, Gary Lee Smith, David Caldwell, Judy Chesnutt, Dixie Partington, David Poirier, and Dixie newcomer Zach Kleinsmith. Dorothy Marie Robinson is back to direct this superb comedy.

The Old Folkie, Ken Sizemore
Ken Sizemore is an "Old Folkie" who has been performing classic folk and rock music of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, all over the U.S. for over 40 years. Ken has a repertoire of over 500 songs and wants passionately to keep the music from those exciting times of creativity and hope alive. When you attend a Ken Sizemore performance, you'll hear songs from some of the finest writers and performers of the folk era and from early rock and roll...such greats as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, and Mary, The Kingston Trio, Tom Paxton, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Simon and Garfunkel, Harry Belefonte, Jim Croce, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, and many, many others. You will also hear some warm, finely crafted original songs that Ken has written over the years about his friends, family, and the events that shaped his life. Sizemore – who has opened for performers such as Peter, Paul and Mary and B.J. Thomas – accompanies himself on the guitar as he performs his own expressive interpretations of classic music and this affable and talented singer regularly takes requests from the crowd while sharing tidbits of music history and encouraging listeners to sing along. From a heart-wrenching version of the Beatles’ “Imagine” to Roger Miller’s “King of the Road,” Sizemore delights local audiences of all ages with uniquely American music that is both comforting and compelling.

Grant Peeples
Don’t miss your chance to hear this brilliant, "outlaw country" songwriter and performer. You can say you heard him at the DIXIE back when……

A clean, but brooding American sound from a finger-in-your-eye songwriter. A biting, edgy, irreverent southern leftneck, articulate twang, thinking-man's songs. Environmental and socio-political themes. He calls his music “alternative southern” or “outlaw country” – whatever it is, it is implicitly political, cultural and relevant. It’s all sung with Peeples’ commanding, seasoned voice. It’s a rough, edgy voice that works like a bucksaw on his recurrent themes of poverty, class struggle, hypocrisy and environmental ruin. From one song to the next, the mood shifts quickly from dark to comedic and back again. In addition, the Lonesome Doves, Lis and Lon Williamson, will be on hand with a special tribute to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris

Revolutionary Wizard: Ben Franklin
This play by Eric Peterson is both entertainment and education. Ben Franklin, one of the most fascinating Americans ever, was an inventor, printer, writer, statesman, scholar, world traveler, philosopher, and ambassador. Surprisingly, he was a contradiction in terms….rogue and gentleman, loving husband and philanderer, traditionalist and trendsetter, loyal Englishman and patriotic American. Hear about some of his lesser known inventions such as the “air bath”, some of his maxims, printed in his Poor Richard’s Almanac - such as “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “no gains without pains” and “he that lies down with dogs shall rise with fleas”. This is a new play and this portrayal by professional actor David Poirier gives us wonderful insight into the life and soul of a marvelously interesting American.

Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids
In this Florida Humanities Council program in the "Look Where We Live!" series, Lucinda Vickers hosts a presentation about Weeki Wache, one of Florida's longest running attractions. Weeki Wachee couldn’t exist anywhere else. The Weeki Wachee mermaids perform 16-20 feet beneath the surface in 72-degree water, and they perform for 30 to 45 minutes without surfacing, and without a continual source of oxygen. They take puffs of oxygen off their air hoses.
For sixty years, the mermaids and their aquatic talents have attracted crowds Then, there’s the water they are performing in. The spring itself is the secret ingredient to Weeki Wachee’s success. People have raved about Florida’s unique springs for centuries. There’s really no place else in the world where you can find nature and kitsch so beautifully melded together. Author Vickers tells us of this wonderful Florida attraction, its history and its future. She tells us of its mermaids and mermen through interviews with many of them as published in her book.of vacationers, film crews, and celebrities. Her book and her discussion captures the enduring appeal of this unique Florida landmark and reveals the remarkable history of a park that began as a local curiosity and became an international attraction.

Everybody Loves Opal
In this play by John Patrick, Opal Kronkie lives in a tumbledown mansion at the edge of the municipal dump. The general disarray of her establishment is aggravated by the fact that Opal collects things - anything that can be toted home in her little red wagon. Opal is also an optimist, for no matter how mean her lot - or her "friends" - Opal responds with unfailing kindness and an abiding faith in the goodness of human nature. Into her rather strange world come three purveyors of bogus perfume on the lam from the authorities. They decide that what she needs is plenty of insurance, a rapid demise, and three beneficiaries. Attempted murder wouldn't seem to be funny, but in Mr. Patrick's magic hands it is uproarious. It has been 10 years since this play was produced at the Theatre. It will be as much a hit now as then because of the timeless wit of John Patrick.

Perceptions of Paradise
An entry in the Florida Humanities Council Series "Look Where We Live!", this program is entitled "Perceptions of Paradise: How Artists Have Helped Shape Florida’s Mythic Image” .

Mallory O'Connor, author and teacher, degreed in painting, American history and art history, presents this program. She is Professor of Art History Emeritus at Sante Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. Florida, with its abundance of water in coastlines, rivers and streams, lakes and springs has been portrayed for hundreds of years as almost a mythical Eden. But what IS paradise? Professor O’Connor poses that question and asks what has shaped our image of paradise and how that vision of paradise has changed. How have artists over the past 400 years reinforced the mythic image of Florida as Eden? The slides of artistic images she presents appeal to our enduring hope that we will find that perfect Garden that we left so long ago.

Visiting Mr. Green
Mr. Green, an elderly, retired dry cleaner, wanders into New York traffic and is almost hit by a car driven by Ross Gardiner, a young corporate executive. The young man is given a community service of helping the recent widower once a week for six months. What starts as a comedy about two men who do not want to be in the same room together becomes a gripping and moving drama as they get to know each other, come to care about each other, and open old wounds they've been hiding and nursing for years. Translated into 22 languages, with over 200 productions in large and small venues, this play by Jeff Baron has won numerous best play and best actor awards throughout the world.
